Printers - InkJet 5/6/7/8/+ colours

Inkjet Printers – 5 / 6 / 7 / 8+ Colours Explained

While a standard 4-colour inkjet printer (CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) produces good colour output, higher quality printers often include additional inks. These extra cartridges improve tonal smoothness, reduce grain in light shades, and extend the colour gamut – allowing for more accurate and visually pleasing results. These features are especially valuable for photographers, designers and users who print frequently with high demands on colour fidelity.

Common Additional Colours & Why They Matter

• Light Cyan (Lc) and Light Magenta (Lm): Used to smooth out light tones (skies, skin etc.), reduce visible dot structure in pastels. Printers with 6 colours often use CcMmYK setup with Lc/Lm.
• Grey / Light Black: Helps in black and white prints, shadows, reducing colour cast, and achieving more nuanced grayscale. Smaller droplets needed for lighter tones.
• Specialty Colours (e.g. Orange, Green, Photo-Black): Found in more advanced or wide format/photo-printers. They allow printing of hues outside the standard CMYK gamut, better matching vibrant or saturated colors.

Advantages of 5 / 6 / 7 / 8-Colour Inkjet Systems

• Smoother transitions in light tones and gradations – less visible grain, especially in skies, skin tones and pastel shades.
• More accurate colour reproduction – non-standard colours help cover more of the visible spectrum.
• Improved photo print quality – deeper colours, better detail, more realism, especially on photo or glossy paper.
• Better black & white or monochrome prints due to dedicated grey or light black inks, reducing reliance on mixed CMY black.

Trade-Offs to Be Aware Of

• Higher price – printers with more inks cost more upfront and extra cartridges are more expensive.
• Greater complexity – ink management (priming, cleaning), driver/software colour profiles and calibration become more important.
• More consumables to replace – extra inks mean more points of potential depletion or drying if under-used.
• Slower print speeds on high-quality modes or large photo prints because multiple inks may need multiple passes.

Use Cases in South Africa, Zimbabwe & Namibia

• Photography enthusiasts who want high-fidelity prints of landscapes, portraits, or art.
• Graphic designers and small print shops producing banners, posters or marketing material where vibrant, accurate colours are crucial.
• Hobbyists creating art books, photo albums or large format prints.
• Users who print often and want lower cost per print by using photo-oriented papers and extended ink sets for more efficient output.

Conclusion

Inkjet printers with 5, 6, 7 or even 8+ colours extend the capability of standard 4-colour systems by adding light colours, grey or specialty inks. While there is extra cost involved, these models offer superior quality, smoother gradients, and more accurate colour reproduction – ideal for photo printing, graphics work and high-quality output. If colour quality matters, these printers are worth considering.
